Reggie And Ronnie Were Visiting Their Secret Place

Reggie and Ronnie
Were at their SECRET PLACE
At the bottom of their garden
Which Aunty Mildred said was a disgrace

For under the cover
Of matted weeds
And long forgotten plants
Which had all ‘gone to seed’
Was a Kingdom
Of special wee fairies
Which they imagined and believed in
As not one of them was scary

…Reggie and Ronnie had not been there
For a very long while
So they did not know
What was making the village fairies smile

There was much excitement
In the streets and the lanes
All the fairies were singing
This happy refrain

“Our Prince and Princess
Who live in yonder castle
Are expecting their first baby
So were making gifts and wrapping parcels
For we’re all overjoyed
As this babe will bring
So much happiness
That’s why we sing”

…As the sun was going
To bed for the day
The bluebells tingled wildly
Then the chief elm did say
This very night
A new babe has been born
But he was looking
Harassed and forlorn


It was as if
Something wasn’t quite right
He was called inside
Then the moon became bright
Joy and excitement
Gave way to concern
Many stayed up and sheltered
Under giant leaves and ferns

Then all of a sudden
The chief elf appeared
‘Oh’, he said calmly
For this we were not prepared

The Prince and Princess
Now have TWO baby girls
The joy at this good news
Set all their hearts in a happy whirl

…There was dancing and singing
Until the sun rose in the morning
Then many went to the castle
Sleepily yawning
But they could not sleep
Until they’d seen for themselves
The two beautiful babes
Lying in walnut shells

The Prince and Princess
Were happy and so proud
As the villagers visited
No one spoke loud

What shall we call them?
Well no one knew
Hundreds of names were mentioned
But none did ring true.

…Reggie and Ronnie
Were quietly looking on
Why not ask those little owls
They wondered where they’d come from

‘Your Majesties, they said
As one was born in the sun
And one born when the moonlight
Had just begun
Why not call one Sunbeam
And the other Moonbeam
‘Perfect names’, they shouted
And it did seem
That even the King and Queen
In their leaf carriage that was pulled
By blue and gold butterflies
At this decision were thrilled

They shook the reigns of pearls
And the butterflies went fast
To the town square notice board
Where they wrote, AT LAST
Our hearts desires
Our dreams have come true
So to the whole Fairy Kingdom
We declare a holiday for you

Slipped quietly home to bed
So very happy
The fairies had welcomed what they said.
