Such A Beautiful Song

Such a beautiful song
Was it a famous OPERA STAR?
A full rendering of every note
Wafted through my window from afar…

The volume was unbelievable
Every note PERFECT IN TONE
How could a mere blackbird
Produce such a melody on his own

He stood on the arial
Every day for weeks
From my window
I would secretly peek
As he gave me a FREE CONCERT
Every afternoon at two
This inspired blackbird
Sang HIS SONG right on cue

…One day while in my garden
Pottering around
As I listened
To HIS SONG so profound
An enormous rat
Came to visit my place
I became aware
Of the scorn and hate on his face

I knew he was considering
Entering my home sneakily
So I made a move
And he disappeared quickly

…That night before bed
I set my finely tuned trap
Which I placed in THE GARDEN
Before my evening nap

To my horror
I slept in the next day
When I looked out the window
To my utter dismay
The trap was still set
And the rat was not there
‘I must release it quickly
In case a cat is caught unaware’

…As I reached the door
I was just too late
Mrs bird was scratching soil
And she met her fate…

She was gravely injured
And died of shock
In the garden shed
That trap I did lock…

…My champion blackbird
Never sang anymore
He’d sit on the fence
With a soul oh so sore

I am so sorry
I told him many times
Because of my grief
I wrote his story in rhyme…

…God is aware of the birds
I had been taught
And I’d caused this death
Because of my ‘lack of thought’

…Death leaves a chasm
Within the soul
Those who cared for their spouse
Will sing in eternity healed and whole
