She Sat On A Park Bench

She sat on a park bench
All alone
Very determined
Not to moan
But her aching heart
Did a heave and a groan
Today she'd become A Widow

The trees were beautiful
The sun was out
But darkness overwhelmed her
All about
Even the children
Enjoying their play
Didn't lift from her
The clouds of grey.

The birds they sang
People passed by
Her whole soul
Felt it had to cry
She had died inside
With the death of her mate
She sat there weeping
Till very late

Nobody noticed
Did anyone care
People had rushed
Here there, everywhere
But who had stopped
And sat by her side
Sixty years ago
She'd become his bride

Oh she remembers
The day so well
He was handsome and young
Who could she tell?
She felt so honoured
He'd chosen her
This pleasant thought
Fleetingly did occur

She went to the Alter
Her heart in a flutter
At seeing him
She melted like butter
He took her arm
As they spoke their vows
She'd shared her life
With him, what now?

Hours of sorrow
Hours of pain
The birth of their children
This joy still remains
Through thick and thin
They weathered each storm
My beloved's gone
I'm worn, torn, forlorn.

She no longer cared
If she sat there forever
Oh why did he die
They'd lived life together
Their love was precious
Her companion and friend
Has gone from her
Her life may as well end.

...She sat on the bench
In a state of sorrow
With not one thought
For the joys of tomorrow
'Come on Mother,'
A voice gently said
'Come with me... I'll help put you to bed'

...She was awoken at night
By a glorious dream
A beautiful garden
The most exquisite ever seen
And there nestled nicely
In the magnificent grounds
A lovely mansion
Where tranquillity abounds

And there on the steps
For her was waiting
Her beloved companion
Complete and celebrating

...She woke in the morning
No longer distressed
Her heart and soul
Now strangely at rest
'Good morning her daughter,'
Gaily said
'I prayed last night
Cause of the tears we've shed
And I saw in a dream
A beautiful place
Reserved for us all
Who are redeemed by His Grace'

Be comforted mother
For the sorrow we bear
Will turn to joy... When we meet over there...

She took her hand
And sat still for awhile
And I suspected
I saw a faint smile
For death is not parting... But just a short wait
Until we unite... Again with our mate
