In the Centre of the Forest

In the centre of the Forest
Was a very large tree
It’s trunk was extra big
And its leaves as high as could be.

In the middle of the trunk
Was a wooden post and door
With a very ornate door knob
That seemed to attract those poor and sore

The pathway was cobbled
Beside a white picket fence
Which was covered with old roses
Which time had made quite dense…

…In the nearby village
The water had turned sour
The children were very sick
As the clock had struck the eleventh hour…

…’Oh what can we do
The villagers cried in grief
We have no bread left to feed them
What can bring us relief'?

One very little girl
Who was unseen in the crowd
Raised her shrill voice
And yelled very loud

‘Lets go see Manu Morepork
Who lives in that giant Kauri tree
His breakfast time is very soon
When usually we have our tea.
So even though it’s getting dark
I know he’ll be awake
We better see him urgently
For everyone’s future’s sake…’

…So a group of concerned villages
Followed that winding trail
Until they reached that giant tree
Then they began to wail
For sorrow, sadness and sickness
Had badly taken it’s toll
They arrived weak, faint and vulnerable
With tired, wounded weary souls

They flopped down on the cobblestones
In their extreme exhausted state
The night was still and airy
What would be their awful fate?

Then they heard that beautiful sound
Coming from the tree
A morpork sounded three times
Very welcomingly

Immediately the door was opened
And they all sat by the fire
They were given hot drinks and biscuits
Then asked what they did require

‘We are in desperate need
Our water is unclean
We’ve come to ask Manu Morpork
For answers to what he’s seen

Manu was gracious and kindly
Around his table they all sat
Then he bowed his head
After a very long chat

He was calm, still and peaceful
With nature he did flow
Then he sang this beautiful song
Which all of us now know.

…’Our Heavenly Father
We honour your name
May your will be done
Yes, we’re sick, tired and lame

Give us this day
Our daily bread
And forgive us for our bad thoughts
That go around in our heads.

As we forgive others
Please forgive us
Help us not to be proud or haughty
In you and your mercy we trust.

You made this earth so beautiful
You are powerful and wise
You own everything
This earth, heaven and the skies’…

…Then he said, Morepork
Three times more
Lifted his head
Saying, ‘this is what life’s for
To be in harmony
With Our Creator and King
Our Heavenly Father
Knows all things.

Talk to Him always
Sing His special prayer
And He will be with you
Very near and aware
Of all your needs
So let’s place him first
In all we think, say and do
And we will not hunger or thirst’…

…Back in the village
In the evening hour
Manu Morepork would be heard
With gratitude, as now
At the sound of His morepork
All the village people would reply
Our Father in Heaven
You’ve shown us why
We are created
To be in harmony with you
Thankyou Manu Morpork
For showing us what is true…

…In the evening hour
When the night is still
We hear him sing
And our hearts with gratitude, fill

Morepork Morepork
Our Heavenly Father reigns supreme
Our children are playing joyfully
Wearing clothes exquisitely clean.
