If It Was Left Up To Me

THE BEAUTY OF CREATION

If it was left up to me
To pick a colour and colour the sea
To paint the sky in nice bright hues
And do the trees however I choose

To repaint the flowers as I saw fit
To change whatever, even just a bit
And to look upon my handiwork
If this was possible and I didn’t shirk

I know, I just know I couldn’t improve
On handiwork that’s better than all in the Louvre
That’s already in place in the sky and the sea
And is all around us in every tree

I could never do as well, that’s a fact
I’d make such a mess I would want it back
The way it was before I started
The way it was before I imparted

My imperfect taste upon the face of the sky
Leaving many people asking why
The colours all clashing and looking so wrong
So bad the birds had no more song

The fish would wonder at what had become
Of the sea around them that once was such fun
To swim all about in, leaping and splashing
Even when from predators swerving and dashing

The Lord’s paint brush has done the job
So very much better than Uncle Bob
Or Jim or Jack or even Uncle Sam
I know there are some who would say oh damn

But it wouldn’t alter the truth about creation
Its beauty its wonder its glorious station
Its place in or lives, keeping us sane
When we foul up, with emotions down the drain

God in his wisdom knows just what we need
To balance our lives while caught up in greed
Following our desires whatever the sin
Creation remains God’s most splendid hymn
